Florence Walton Pomeroy was a New Jersey-based artist who primarily created portraits, still lifes, and American Scene oil paintings, often of the urban environment such as the present work. She studied with George Bellows, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Ann Goldthwaite, and at the New York School of Applied Design for Women. Pomeroy was a member of, and exhibited extensively with, the National Association of Women Artists. From the late 1910s through the 1940s, Pomeroy also showed in New York at the Society of Independent Artists, the National Academy of Design, and the Bonestell Gallery, where she was honored with a solo exhibition in 1947. Pomeroy was a member of the Montclair Art Association and served on juries for some of its exhibitions, including with Ernest Fiene. She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art and other standard references.
